Statement of Purpose

The MCPL Employees Union was elected to represent the employees of Monroe County Public Library in 2008, following several years of organizing, and signed its first Agreement with the Library in 2010.  Our Local 2802 is affiliated with Council 62 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).


The objective of this local is to carry out on a local basis, the objectives of AFSCME, and the mission of the local as listed below:
  • To advocate for working conditions, rates of pay, benefits and pensions for our members by negotiating and enforcing a strong contract.
  • To cultivate workplace democracy and sustain a respectful workplace environment.  
  • To provide excellent service to the public.
  • To have an inclusive union with members who are engaged in union activities.
  • To build and support an educated, strong and effective shop steward structure.
  • To promote open communication with current and eligible members, including the utilization of interactive information sharing technology.
  • To be a positive presence in the community where we work, live and play.
  • To stay informed of political issues and campaigns that affect our members at the local, state, national, and international level.
